The Best DIY Bagel Chips and Easy Homemade Hummus

Bagel chips with hummus are the next best thing after a warm, fresh Montreal bagel.

For anyone living in Montreal, we know that bagels are a precious commodity.

Along with the New York bagel, Montreal bagels are the most well known in world.

There are differences in how these bagels are made and how they taste. Opinions on which is better are, like most opinions, rampant and over exaggerated.

Huffington Post wrote an article titled Bagel Wars: Montreal Style vs. New York Style Bagels….. enough said.

If you are curious as to the differences, in short, Montreal style  bagels are more dense, smaller, and sweeter. I find them very pleasantly chewy and packed with flavour.

On the other hand, New York bagels are larger, fluffier, and less sweet (check out a great recipe for them here on The Rare Welsh Bit).

Both types of bagels were introduced to their respective cities with the influx of Jewish citizens. They have been eaten for hundreds of years by Jewish communities with the first mention of them occurring in 1610

How to Make DIY Garlicky Everything Bagel Chips

Bagel chips are best made with bagels that are a couple of days old.

I highly prefer Montreal style bagels for these bagel chips because of their intense, sweet, nutty flavour but any type of bagel will do.

You may have to adjust your baking time if your bagels are very fresh or fluffier. These bagels were made fresh and then left for a couple of days.

bagel chips on baking tray

For this recipe, I used 4 bagels. There is probably enough seasoning to go with 5 bagels if you’d like, depending on size.

Keep in mind that Montreal bagels are smaller than New York style.

Slice your bagels vertically into coins about 1/2 inch thick.

Place them on a baking sheet in a preheated 350 degree oven. Bake for 15 minutes and check for crispiness. You may have to return the bagel chips to the oven if your bagels were more moist than mine from the start.

Add 2 tbsp of oil (mild tasting olive oil or grape seed oil) to a bowl.

In a separate dish, mix any or all of the following seasonings as desired:

Everything Bagel Seasoning

  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tbsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tbsp of minced dehydrated onion
  •  1/2 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds (unless your bagels already had plenty!)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
Toss baked bagel chips with the oil in the bowl and add half of the seasoning mixture. Mix well to coat. Add remaining oil and seasonings and mix once more to combine.

That’s it! These bagel chips are totally addicting! Especially with hummus.

If hummus isn’t your thing, check out these three delicious veggie dips from My Pure Plants. They will all pair well with bagel chips!

I also love using this seasoning on popcorn! It’s a great all around diy seasoning mix to have on hand. Check out this post for How to Make Stovetop Popcorn plus a Nacho Seasoning Recipe.

Seasoning Easy Hummus

Back in university, especially during my vegetarian days, I made a LOT of hummus.

I still make it quite often because it is such a cheap and easy snack to make for my kids and everyone else! I even make it for dessert!

Yup. Dessert hummus (try my Luscious Raspberry Lemon Dessert Hummus that has been featured on She Knows).

This easy homemade hummus is the perfect match for savory, garlic everything bagel chips.

Hummus to me should be quite garlic intense and full of lemon flavour. I have seen many hummus recipes with complaints about how garlicky it is.

In my opinion, if you do not enjoy garlic, it is kind of silly to make a dish that is classically full of garlic. It is the main flavour profile.

Lemon and garlic are two of my favourite flavours and I am fairly heavy handed with them whenever I use either. Feel free to adjust to your liking.

I do highly recommend that you choose fresh garlic and fresh lemon juice instead of any bottled products.

Since this easy hummus has few ingredients that stand out, it is important to choose quality if you want it to taste great!

How to Make Easy Homemade Hummus For Bagel Chips

ingredients for hummus

Hummus is so easy to make! I call this easy homemade hummus but all hummus is rather easy.

Unless you are roasting your garlic or adding things like roasted red peppers, etc. there aren’t many steps to making easy hummus.

For this recipe, I just plunk everything into my food processor and blend away.

I like my hummus to be as smooth as possible but I do not take the extra time to shell my chickpeas.

Shelling chickpeas is highly laborious and not something I feel is necessary for easy homemade hummus that you just want to enjoy as a simple snack with your family.

If you are making this for esteemed guests or a hummus competition or something, feel free to shell your chickpeas!

what You Will Need for easy hummus

  • one can of chickpeas (14 or 15oz, 348ml)
  •  1/4 to 3/4 cup of tahini (to your taste. I use the upper range)
  • 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice (one large juicy lemon)
  •  3-5 cloves of garlic (some people prefer to use as little as one, it’s up to you)
  •  1-2 tsp of kosher salt, to taste
  •  1/2 tsp of cumin, or to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, plus more for topping
  • other seasonings as desired such as smoked paprika, Za’atar, sumac, fresh parsley for topping or blending in
  •  1 cup of ice water on hand for blending

If you make your chickpeas from dry at home and you have an Instant Pot, I recommend you use it for this! Chickpeas take no time to cook in the Instant Pot.

Instructions for easy hummus

  • First add your drained and rinsed chickpeas to your food processor or blender. You can cook your chickpeas at home or buy canned.

This recipe uses one 14 or 15 oz. can (348ml) of chickpeas for your convenience but I always double it. The size of your can will depend if you live in the U.S. or Canada.

  • After adding your chickpeas, add your tahini and lemon juice. At this point, blend until everything starts to get smooth and thick.
  • Add garlic, cumin, salt, and other desired seasonings, along with the olive oil.
  • Blend for 2 minutes. Check for consistency and add ice water while the machine is running, a little at a time until you have reached your desired consistency (use as much or little as you need, go slowly).

I’m so picky about my hummus. So I should at least attempt to make my own. I’ll have to do a bit of research though to see where I can purchase the Za’atar, and sumac.
